Domestic Violence

Domestic violence can no longer be seen as a crime between a man and woman. The typical victim of domestic violence has been a wife or girlfriend who is being abused by their boyfriend or spouse. But, the dynamics of domestic violence are starting to change in the 21st Century. With these changing dynamics concerning domestic violence, law enforcement, court system, and the general public need to change their approach to dealing with domestic violence.

Here are a few new dynamics concerning how domestic violence should be looked at and approached:

  1. Women have been known to abuse their husbands and boyfriends.
  2. Dating violence is prevalent among young people from age 12 years old to 25 years old.
  3. Same sex domestic violence is on the rise.

When it comes to women being seen as the abuser or aggressor in an intimate relationship, there is the misconception that only men are capable of being abusive. But, there are many men out there who have been taught by their parents to never hit or abuse a woman under any circumstances. There are many women out there who have been charged with and found guilty of abuse in an intimate relationship. There are countless cases where police are called to a couple’s home because the woman has been abusing and hitting their husband or boyfriend. But, sometimes the police will not require the woman to leave the home, but will require the man to leave the home because of the societal misconception of men being the abusers. Many times the police will believe that the woman was defending herself and did not start the fight. Also, there are incidences where women are abusive towards other women who may be their lover, friend, or family member. There needs to be a change in how law enforcement responds to domestic violence incidences because in some cases the woman may be the abuser and not the man.

Dating violence has become a great problem among young people from age 12 years old to 25 years old. Many young people are afraid to let anyone know that they are being hit and abused by their significant other because of embarrassment and the pressure to remain quiet. This has been a major issue on high school campuses and college campuses. Especially, in incidences where the abuser may be a member of a sporting team and they play a major role in the team winning games. The number one cause of death for young people from 12 years old to 25 years old is being killed by their girlfriend or boyfriend. The number one victims of death from domestic violence is young women who have been killed by their boyfriends.

Another demographic where domestic violence has grown is among same sex couples including man-man relationships, woman-woman relationships, and relative relationships. There is an increase in domestic violence between relatives like sisters, brothers, and parents and children. Police have had to respond to a great increase in domestic violence cases involving family members.

There needs to be a great change in how law enforcement, the court system, and the general public respond to domestic violence. It can no longer be seen as a personal issue between the couple, but must be seen as a public issue. Domestic violence is a very serious issue that must be addressed by the public in a serious way. We have to stop putting a bandage on domestic violence and cure the disease at its core.
