Useful guidelines on how to create a narrative essay

When you are assigned a narrative essay your goal is to tell a story. You are the narrator and you want to express yourself in a creative and emotionally moving manner. You want to share something personal or anecdotal in nature. Here are some useful guidelines to follow on how to write a narrative essay:

1. If you are writing your narrative essay in the form of a storm then you have to include every part. This means that you have to write all of the parts that would be found in a story including:

  • The introduction
  • The plot
  • The characters
  • The setting
  • The climax
  • The conclusion

2. If you are not writing your narrative as a story then this is not required. But you will still need to offer information to your reader in a cohesive manner. If you are asked to write a book report-for example-you do not need to tell a story but rather follow the story line of the book on which you are writing and offer information about it to the reader.

3. Your paper needs purpose. You have to make a point with your narrative. You are not just narrating for the sake of narrating. There is a point or a purpose to it and you have to make it.

4. Your paper should be written clearly from one point of view. It is very common for students to write from the viewpoint of the author but you should not feel confined by this. You can write from any other view you choose. As the author you have this freedom. You can write from any viewpoint that is most comfortable so long as it is written clearly. If you want to write in the first person you can. But just be careful not to overdo it.

5. Be concise with your language. Choose your words carefully and artfully if possible. Use precise words to evoke certain senses or emotions in your reader.

6. Stay organized. Your paper needs to have an introduction that sets the tone for the rest of the writing. You do not want your reader to guess why you have written the narrative. You want to remain in control of the paper and lead your reader through the narrative with organized purpose so that they know what is going on at all times.
