essay writing tips
The structure of an essay is very important. It is what makes one paragraph flow seamlessly into the next to tell a story, prove a point, or make an argument. Whenever you are writing an essay consider the structure of the essay to be like a safety net. Even if you mess up somewhere, you can’t actually fall down because it is properly structured and that is half of the battle. The introduction is the first part of an essay’s structure.
The great thing about the introduction paragraph is that it tells you what to do right there in the title. You introduce the topic to the reader. Give them an idea of what your essay will be about. This should also get their attention and keep them reading further so make it interesting.
Give them a very broad idea of what they will learn while reading the rest of the essay. It is very important not to be too specific here. Otherwise you have less to talk about in the essay’s body. Just a general idea of what you will discuss and what they will learn is fine here. This should continue to hold their interest in your essay.
The introduction is also the part of the essay where you tell the reader what kind of essay this will be. Will you be arguing a point? Will you try to persuade the reader? Will you be talking about research you have done? Now is the time to let them in on the type of essay you are constructing.
By the end of the introduction the reader should know what the topic of the essay will be along with what it entails and what type of essay it is. They may know that the topic is about the president, but that is not enough. They must also know what about the president you will speak of and whether you are proving a point, making an argument about him or convincing them of something specific. A good introduction is, much like a conclusion, a summary of the essay but as an introduction to it rather than a summing up point.
